Program Description

Event Details

Join us on this date when our special Black History Month speaker will be Eileen Yanoviak, PhD., the author of The Tenacious Nurse Nichols: An Unsung African American Civil War Hero. It is scheduled to be released in May 2025.

Lucy Higgs Nichols was a Civil War nurse who escaped enslavement to join the Indiana 23rd Regiment. She achieved notoriety, nobility, and self-sufficiency in spite of harrowing obstacles and unimaginable pain, in a post-Civil War era that often denied Black Americans and women both justice and opportunity.

Eileen Yanoviak holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Louisville and she is the former director of the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, Indiana. Currently, she is a non-profit professional and teaches at Northern Kentucky University and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
